SCOP Story
Early in the school year 1983-1984, a group of dynamic teachers handling subjects in Speech and Drama in a few institutions in Metro Manila bonded together to establish an organization they named Speech Communication Organization of the Philippines, SCŌP for short.
The group under the leadership of Dr. Judith N. Bunyi defined the mission-vision of SCŌP and drew up its Constitution and By-laws.
By the end of school year 1983-1984, the group organized a founding convention for SCŌP before the opening of school year 1984-1985. This founding convention was held on May 5, 1984 at De La Salle University Manila, with the following members elected to the first official Board of Directors: Dr. Judith M. Bunyi, President; Dr. Rustica Carpio, Executive Vice President; Gloria B. Gozum, Vice President; Maria Luisa C. Sadorra, Secretary; Dr. Priscilla F. Arguelles, Treasurer; Sonia J. Valenciano, P.R.O; Dr. Angela P. Sarile, Business Manager; and Dr. Leopoldo C. Gonzales, Director.
As stated in the Constitution, SCŌP, as a scholarly and professional organization, is envisioned to provide: 1) forums for professional exchange among members; 2) resources for keeping abreast of new developments; 3) opportunities for professional service; and 4) a voice for the speech communication profession.
Since its organization, SCŌP has attained public recognition as a national, professional organization of speech educators, researchers, practitioners, and institutions in the Philippines committed to promote education, scholarship, and practice in the field of speech communication.
SCŌP gives lectures and seminar-workshops on speech communication through its Speakers Bureau. Another implementing arm of its mission is the SCŌP Readers Ensemble, which presents oral interpretation programs to enhance the teaching and appreciation of literature. These activities are carried out in both English and Filipino on the request of the institution organizing the activity.
Through the years, from its founding convention to the present, the following have served as President:
